That is easy to understand when you realize that it was only the illusion of strength and wellness that they started out with. All that has changed is that the illusion has had time to play itself out to its inevitable tragic conclusion. Truth is, he was lame and incompetent from the start, but did a better job of creating the illusion of something else. Since then, reality has interfered and the illusion has crumbled.
